How Long Does It Take to Reach 120° After Knee Replacement?

Worried you’re behind on bending to 120°? A PT explains why people worry about this number way more than they should.

“How long should it take to reach 120 degrees?” It’s one of the most common questions after surgery — and people worry about this number way more than they should.

Range of motion does matter. Being able to bend the knee helps with stairs, getting in and out of chairs and cars, and daily function. But here’s what’s easy to miss: there is no universal timeline. Some people reach 120° quickly, others take several months, and some keep improving long after they assumed they were done — and none of that automatically means something is wrong.

Don’t chase the number in isolation

Every recovery is different: starting mobility, swelling, pain levels, surgical technique, and healing all vary. Comparing your number to a stranger’s in a Facebook group rarely tells the whole story. What matters is whether you are making progress.

And one of the biggest mistakes is becoming so fixated on a number that you forget everything else: How are you walking? How is your swelling? Your strength? Your confidence? Those matter too. Often the fastest way to improve the number is to manage the swelling underneath it.
