Is It Normal for a Knee Replacement to Click or Pop?

Hearing clicking, clunking, or popping from your new knee? Why these mechanical sensations are common after knee replacement — and when to ask.

You’re recovering well — walking better, getting stronger — and then one day you notice it: a click. And the worry starts. “Did something come loose? Should I be concerned?”

The reality is that many knee replacement patients notice some degree of clicking, clunking, popping, or mechanical sensations at some point during recovery. For a lot of people it isn’t painful at all — it’s just… different.

Why it happens

A knee replacement isn’t the same as the knee you were born with. There are new surfaces moving together, swelling is changing, muscles are getting stronger, and walking patterns are improving. A lot is happening at once.

Often what worries people most isn’t the sensation itself — it’s not knowing whether it’s expected. Some notice clicking early and barely think about it later; some notice it longer; some never really notice it at all. Every recovery is different.

If you experience new pain, instability, swelling, or other concerns about your knee replacement, contact your surgeon or healthcare team.
